To draw. As the years of early grade school passed, my handwritten words learned to march with metered confidence across a sheet of blue-ruled school-paper. This gave me nearly the same pleasure as doing a good drawing of a cowboy. Or a cat. Of course the act of writing with the art of drawing.
The aim of storytelling is to make convincing pictures. The author has to give the reader something to see. To call it a word-picture may sound juvenile, but that circumlocution returns us to our pre-literate days of oral storytelling. Long before I heard of left brain-right brain theories of cognitive function, before I was an abstract thinker at all or capable of speaking my thoughts, I knew that drawing and writing inform each other.
Often a cue to the next written turn of events was supplied by what my visual mind wanted to draw. I still begin a new novel by hand. Writing by hand, among other things, is onerous and painful. One has to go slowly, to hesitate. The wrist aches. The mind freezes.
Pausing to shake the crimps out of the muscles buys the writer a few extra moments to consider the best way to sidle into the next sentence, lasso the next image. Producer Marc Platt also met with the writers to help establish the structure of the show. After they completed the outline, Schwartz worked at the piano on the songs for Wicked , which he completed over time.
Throughout the four years of the development process for this show, Schwartz worked closely with Winnie Holzman who wrote the "book" of the musical script. Schwartz once said about his collaboration with Holzman: "I felt like I knew how to write Elphaba and Winnie knew how to write Glinda, so between the two of us, we kind of got there. The creative team worked on making changes to the show before coming to New York. It was nominated for 10 Tony Awards. The musical ran at the Oriental Theatre through January Los Angeles. The musical played at the Pantages Theatre February January San Francisco. Glinda further admits that she and Elphaba were best friends. He is more affectionate towards his younger child, who is physically disabled from a birth defect.
As they bid goodbye, Nessarose receives a pair of silver slippers as a gift. Madame Morrible, another witch and the headmistress, takes Nessarose under her tutelage as she is disabled and also the favorite child. Elphaba is asked to be the roommate of the popular and beautiful Galinda. However, she attempts to reunite with her sister using her telekinetic powers and succeeds. The headmistress is impressed and opts to teach her sorcery so that one day she can join the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Dillamond, their history teacher, is the only animal professor a goat at Shiz University. He plans an orientation party. Galinda is asked out by Boq, a persistent Munchkin who fancies her. However, she convinces him to accompany Nessarose, clearing her path to partner Fiyero. Nessarose, a loner, is delighted with the fact and starts to fall for him.
Meanwhile, Madame Morrible invites Galinda to her sorcery class and also gives her a wand, stating that Elphaba insisted on it. As they arrive at the party, Elphaba becomes a laughing stock due to the hat and dances alone in a corner. Galinda immediately regrets her actions and joins Elphaba, and soon, everyone else follows. After the party, the girls become friends and start exchanging secrets.
Galinda shares her plan of marrying Fiyero while Elphaba divulges the bottle of green potion belonging to her mother. Soon, Dr. Dillamond is excommunicated. Elphaba wants to help him, but nobody supports her.
